Vertical Docks
Adapt your workstation to you, not the other way around

Guide: VESA Arm Selection

Below are a few of our favorite VESA arms that will help to position your Vertical dock and monitors at the ideal height and viewing distance.

Safety note:

VESA arms are designed for different monitor sizes and weights. If you are using gas-adjustable monitor arms intended for heavier monitors, the arm may drift up when you un-dock your Surface and if you're not careful, this could result in personal injury or damage to your Surface. To avoid this, follow the directions included with your VESA arm closely and add weight to the arm to ensure it is operating within the weight range specified by the manufacturer.

VESA arm weight tuning:

The Vertical Dock weighs less than most monitors. So to use it with a heavy-duty monitor arms, you may need to add weight on the end of the arm to ensure the Dock doesn't drift upwards when undocking. Depending on the model used, the Vertical Dock without a Surface docked weighs ~2-3 pounds (0.9-1.25kg). With the Surface docked, the combined weight is ~3-6.75 pounds (1.4-3kg). Please contact us with any questions about tuning yoru VESA arm. Customers have successfully used the following products to tune their arms:

Horizontal / Vertical rotation support:

In order to rotate your Surface between vertical and horizontal orientations, your VESA arm needs to have a swivel or pivoting end. Look for models that advertise 360° or 90° rotation. To be clear, the Vertical Dock does not include rotation capability built-in - this capability is provided by the monitor arm. Depending on the model ordered, your Vertical Dock will come with the necessary accesories to ensure the Surface is supported in either Vertical or Horizontal orientation when used with your VESA arm.

Single Arms:

If external monitors are already well positioned, you need not spend a fortune on new monitor arms. A single arm can be used for positioning your Vertical dock at the correct height. We recommend gas-adjustable models tuned for the weight of the Surface + Dock, but budget non-adjustable models work OK too:

  1. Fleximounts M01 light-duty single gas-adjustable arm (3-11 pounds) ($40)
  2. MonoPrice non-adjustable ($25)
  3. ErgoTron LX ERG45241026 (with optional arm extension, you can bring the Surface as far as your lap for drawing) ($175)
    • Note this arm works best with 7-25 pounds weight. You may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results with the Vertical dock.

Single to Dual conversion adapters:

If you already have VESA arms and just want to add your Surface on the side without buying a new arm, these single -> dual adapters may help. Do note that these adapters weigh ~5.5 pounds (2.5kg) and when combined with the weight of the Vertical Dock + Surface, may be too much weight for budget single arms. Check the manufacturer specs carefully.

  1. VIVO Dual VESA Bracket Adapter (MOUNT-VW02A)
  2. DoubleSight Universal Dual Monitor Cross Bar (DS-ExtBar)

Dual Arms:

A dual arm can hold a Vertical dock plus a single monitor or two monitors. Our favorite models are from Loctek:

  1. Loctek D5D mid-duty dual gas-adjustable arms (up to two 27" monitors 3-11 pounds each - well tuned for positioning the Vertical Dock) ($75)
  2. Loctek D5DH heavy duty dual gas adjustable (up to two 27" monitors @ 9-22 pounds each) ($90)
    • Note this arm works best with 9-22 pounds weight. You may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results with the Vertical dock.
  3. Loctek D7DR heavy-duty dual gas-adjustable (up to two 34" wide monitors @22 pounds each)
    • Note this arm works best with 9-22 pounds weight. You may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results with the Vertical dock.
  4. Ergotron LX ERG45245026 (with optional arm extension, you can bring the Surface as far as your lap for drawing) ($225)
    • Note this arm works best with 7-25 pounds weight. You may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results with the Vertical dock.

Dual Arms (stacked):

While not receommended for most customers, stacking screens can be helpful for specific applications

  1. Locktek D7SD heavy duty ($190)
  2. Felximounts 8541636427 light duty ($105)

Triple Arms:

Triple arms are great for a clean look in mounting two monitors plus a vertical dock. But in our experience, there is a price premium and less flexibility in monitor placement. Unless you absolutely need the cleanest look for your desk, many customers are better served getting a dual mount such as the Loctek D5D plus a single mount like the Fleximounts M01. That being said, here are a few triple mounts that customers have reported success with:

  1. EleTab triple mount ($125)
  2. Mount-It MI-2753 Arms ($150)
  3. HumanScale M2 M/Flex Arms ($500)
    • For best results with the Vertical dock, get the "M2 light" arm. M2 or M8 arms are better for heavier monitors and you may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results.

Free-standing Mounts

The above mounts use clamp mechanisms which won't work for some desks. Free-standing weighted models such as these will work better but fewer adjustments are available compared to most clamp-style:

  1. VIVO Single Stand V001H ($45-50)
  2. Hemudu HT05B-001 Single Monitor Stand ($35-$40)
  3. Mount-It Dual articulating Stand MI-792 ($75)
  4. VIVO Dual Stand V002P ($45-75)
  5. VIVO Triple Stand V003FG ($80)

Wall mounts:

Some customers prefer to have their screens wall-mounted like a home theatre setup for maximum desk-space savings

  1. AmazonBasics single stand (~$25)
  2. Wali single Gas adjust arm ($35-$40)
    • Note this arm works best with 6-14 pounds weight. You may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results with the Vertical dock.
  3. Wali dual gas-adjust arms ($75)
    • Note this arm works best with 6-14 pounds weight. You may need to add weight to the end of the arm for best results with the Vertical dock.
